Irvine, Calif. – Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto thrilled hometown fans with his 450 class Moto 1 victory and eventually finished the day second overall with a 1-2 moto result. Teammate Jake Weimer charged in the first moto to come back from 36th to finish 15th and then improved during the second moto to finish eighth for 12th overall.
As the series heads into a two-week break, Villopoto will be able to enjoy his newfound points lead after a hard-fought 1-2 finish in his home state of Washington. The first moto saw Villopoto grab the holeshot and lead wire-to-wire, while the second moto also saw him grab the holeshot before a red flag came out less than five minutes into the race. On the restart, Villopoto was second on the start and remained there until the finish for second overall.
“It’s hard to say how the race would have gone if the red flag wouldn’t have come out,” said Villopoto. “You start getting into a groove and then you have to stop. I’m bummed for Trey (Canard) and hope he gets better. On the restart, Ryan (Dungey) edged me by a wheel on the holeshot and I wasn’t able to get up to him. I would have liked to have walked out of here with a little more of a points gap, but I’ll take the lead.”
Two Weekends Off
After eight rounds of racing, the AMA Motocross Championship series will take two weekends off as the motocross focus shifts to the up-and-coming amateurs at the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, taking place at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. The series will pick back up on August 13 at Unadilla in New Berlin, N.Y.
